How to avoid an unnecessary tooth drilling?
Lost teeth can be replaced with one or several implants depending to the number of teeth missing. The implant consists of a screw, which is built into the bone and which functions of the tooth root, and of a superstructure, mounted on the screw, that together with the crown functions as the tooth crown.
Implants are a high-quality, long-lasting solution to the loss of teeth. The use of an implant avoids the need for a small bridge, that would require drilling at least two natural teeth. The bone around the implant behaves the same way as in the case of a natural tooth, which is why we say that implants adhere to the bone – something not happening in the case of a bridge. In the absence of a tooth root the bone will namely shrink and disappear, a process happening when teeth are replaced by bridges.
Implants are typically manufactured from titanium, which is biocompatible with the human organism, so allergic reactions or implant rejections after the installation are extremely rare and almost never happen.
Implants can be used to anchor a dental prosthesis in order to ensure its stability and to provide comfort when worn and a natural appearance of the teeth.
In cases where the jaw, because of a long-term gap caused by the absent tooth, is missing bone, the bone material is replaced by an artificial or autologous bone, depending on the amount of bone that needs to be replaced. Depending on the size of the procedure, the implant is installed in two steps: the first step to remediate bone loss and, after few months, the second step to install the implant.
Before any procedure a detailed analysis of the case is mandatory. A clinical examination, analysis of X-ray images and the CT images and design of the best solution are required.
Implants have a wide range of indications and can be used with the majority of healthy adults.
